New Zealand offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in the world, making it a dream destination for campervan travelers. Finding the best campsites close to iconic sights lets you enjoy the freedom of vanlife while waking up to stunning views every day. Whether you crave rugged coastlines, serene lakes, or majestic mountains, these ten campervan sites put you right next to unforgettable adventures.

1. Kingston Campsite - South Shores of Lake Wakatipu
This is a beautiful free camping site located on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu, not far from Queenstown. The location makes it a great place to stay while you're heading towards Te Anau. There is plenty of space for all sized of campervans and RV's, with sites right along the rocky beach and shores of the lake so you can fall asleep to the sounds of crashing waves. The drive to get here from Queenstown is simple and picturesque as you wind along the lake. There are basic drop toilets located on site and it is well maintained.
This site is for CSC vehicles only, no camping in tents, two night maximum stay and has space for up to 50 vehicles.

2. Round Bush Campsite - Lake Ohau
Located down a dirt road on the shores of Lake Ohau, the Round Bush Campsite is a bit of a hidden gem. There is plenty of space for campervans, but given the off the beaten path location of this site, it is unlikely to be very busy. You can find a site along the shores or nestled in the trees, close to the water. This site was one of my favourite I found to rest for a day or two in a queiet and serene location. You're on the sparkling blue waters of Lake Ohau of Twizel with mountains off in the distance. You can catch some great sunshine while you rest between adventurous days to recoup your energy. Highly recommend if you're looking for a chill and quiet location to spend a night or two.
There are basic drop toilets on site, CSC camping.

3. Lake Pukaki Reserve - The Pines
This is a great location due to its proximity to Aoraki/Mt. Cook and the stunning views it provides across the blue waters of Lake Pukaki to mountains in the distance just 70km away. Located at the end of Lake Pukaki just off the highway, it is a very exposed location to wind and sun. You will feel the wind gusts rocking your vehicle! Despite this, the views it provides are too stunning to pass up on while you watch the sunset. If you're looking for something a bit more sheltered, Lake Wardell down the road is more out of the wind and provides tree cover to shelter you from the sun. Due to the stunning views, you can expect this site to fill up quickly in the evening.
There are basic drop toilets, maximum stay of three nights, CSC vehicles only.

4. Otaki River - North Bank
If you need a place to stay on the north island close to the ferries, this is a great spot. Located right on the Tasman Sea on the western shores of the north island, you're bound to get unreal sunset views. This site offers a long and expansive rocky beach with views of Kapiti Coast and the Tararua Ranges. There are walking paths, bike trails and kilometers of shoreline to explore. Being on the coast, there can be quite a bit of wind and salt spray, so you may want to give your vehicle a hose down after staying here to protect from rusting. There are drop toilets nearby with signage.

5. Fox River / Potikohua Freedom Camping
If you're making your way down the west coast of South Island from Abel Tasman, then this is a great spot to stay right along the ocean for stunning views. The drive to get here takes your through scenic winding roads, we came from the north from Abel Tasman and stopped here overnight on our way to Arthurs Pass. This site is located right along a river that meanders into the ocean and has a long beach with jagged rocky formations.
There are drop toilets here and a maximum stay of two nights.
