Mont St. Michel, France

Mont Saint-Michel is a small rocky island located in Normandy, France, at the mouth of the Couesnon River. It is situated approximately one kilometer (0.6 miles) off the country's northwestern coast. The island is known for its stunning medieval abbey, which sits atop a rocky pinnacle and dominates the island's landscape.

The abbey is dedicated to the archangel Michael and has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Mont Saint-Michel has a rich history that dates back more than a thousand years. It was originally established as a strategic stronghold during the 8th century and later became a major pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. During high tide, Mont Saint-Michel appears as an island, surrounded by water. However, during low tide, a natural causeway is exposed, allowing access to the island on foot.

The abbey of Mont Saint-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been recognized for its historical and cultural significance. It has served as a place of worship, a center of learning, and a symbol of spiritual devotion. The surrounding bay of Mont Saint-Michel is known for its exceptional biodiversity, recognized as an important habitat for various species of birds and marine life. It is also subject to one of the highest tidal ranges in Europe, resulting in a dynamic and ever-changing natural environment.
