Skogafoss

Skogafoss, Iceland

Roaring with immense power, Skógafoss stands as a force of nature in the captivating landscapes of Iceland. This waterfall cascades down a towering 60-meter drop, creating a curtain of mist and thundering white water. The name Skógafoss translates to "Forest Waterfall," derived from the lush greenery that surrounds it. Skógafoss is fed by the Skógá River, which originates from the nearby Eyjafjallajökull (ay·uh·fyaat·laa·yow·kl) glacier.

According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The legend continues that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again. The ring was allegedly given to the local church. The old church door ring is now in the Skógar museum.

Skógafoss also holds significance as it marks the boundary of two contrasting landscapes. To the west lies the lush, green region of Þórsmörk, known for its verdant forests and tranquil beauty. To the east, the landscape transforms into a barren expanse of black sand plains, shaped by volcanic activity over centuries. This stark contrast offers a glimpse into Iceland's geological diversity.
